Andrés Orozco-Estrada

Andrés Orozco-Estrada, born in Colombia and trained in Vienna, is one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation. In September 2014, he took up the positions of Music Director of the Houston Symphony and Chief Conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. From the 2015/16 season, he also became the Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Orozco-Estrada first came to international attention in 2004 when he took over a concert with the Tonkünstler Orchestra Niederösterreich at the Vienna Musikverein. Numerous engagements with many international orchestras followed, and since then, Orozco-Estrada developed a highly successful musical partnership with the Tonkünstler Orchestra, serving as Music Director from the 2009/10 season until 2015.

Orozco-Estrada now appears with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, Wiener Symphoniker, Munich Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra Rome, and the Orchestre National de France.

Recent successful debuts have included the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Oslo Philharmonic. In the summer of 2014, he made a highly successful debut at Glyndebourne Festival Opera conducting “Don Giovanni”, and in 2015 he debuted at the Salzburg Festival where he returns in summer 2018.

Recent CDs released on Pentatone are generating a great deal of attention and include Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring and Richard Strauss’s “Ein Heldenleben” and “Macbeth” both with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony. He has also recorded the Dvořák symphonies 6, 7, 8 and 9 with the Houston Symphony.

Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his musical studies on the violin and had his first conducting lessons at the age of 15. In 1997, he moved to Vienna where he joined the conducting class of Uroš Lajovic, pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky, at the renowned Vienna Music Academy, completing his degree with distinction by conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Vienna Musikverein. Orozco-Estrada currently lives in Vienna.
